What’s included — and what to bring

Included: fishing license, bait, tackle, ice, all fishing equipment, captain, and mate. Not included (bring your own): food, drinks, sunscreen, camera, and personal items.

What actually determines the cost of a charter

Charter rates in Destin vary widely, and the difference usually comes down to three things — the boat, the captain, and the mate.

  • The boat. A clean, well-maintained boat signals an operator who invests in mechanical upkeep too — the difference between a comfortable trip and a broken A/C 20 miles offshore. With charter boats, seasoned often beats brand-new: an established owner reinvests in top-tier equipment and customer comforts rather than just newness.
  • The captain. Local experience is what you’re paying for. A captain with decades on these waters knows the reefs, the seasonal patterns, and the honey holes that put you on fish. It also matters whether the captain owns the boat — owner-operators have the final say on your trip and a direct stake in your experience, versus contract captains who may rotate boats year to year.
  • The mate. The deckhand teaches technique, rigs your lines, gaffs your catch, and keeps the trip moving. A great mate is the difference between a good day and a great one — and since mates work largely on tips, service shows.

The takeaway: the cheapest hourly rate isn’t the best value, and the most expensive isn’t automatically the best boat. Research the boat, captain, and crew, then book the operator that fits your group.
