Questions for Captain Jason Mikel
How do you prepare for a day of deep sea fishing on the Finest Kind Charter Boat?
“I don’t really prepare in the usual sense. I decide how the day is going to go once I talk to everyone and get their goals.”
What do you love most about being a charter boat captain?
“I like seeing the kids, their excitement. That’s the best part.”
With over 30 years of experience, how have you seen the deep sea fishing industry evolve in Destin, and how have you adapted the Finest Kind to these changes?
“The clients have changed, and the expectations have changed. So, it’s gone from big fish kills to fill the freezer to people just going to have a good time – entertainment.”
The Finest Kind Charter Boat
In your experience, what are fishermen really looking for when they book a charter with the Finest Kind Charter Boat?
“Having a good time – entertainment value, taking enough fish home for dinner, fish photos.”
How do you balance the need for comfort with the practical requirements of a fishing charter on the Finest Kind Charter Boat?
“With the Finest Kind, we went as nice as possible. We couldn’t go any nicer for luxury and maintain functionality. Go too nice and stuff breaks.”
How do you cater to large groups of up to 22 fishermen aboard the Finest Kind, and what are the challenges and rewards of managing such groups?
“Finest Kind Charters are great for companies for their team building. We always carry two mates so we can handle larger groups and keep up with their needs. Those trips are higher priced than base trips, of course, with no limitations except time. We can go anywhere we need to go.”
What makes Finest Kind Charters different from others?
“What makes us different is we have a great deal of safety equipment on board. The boat is more luxurious than the vast majority and with better service. Our goal is to be the best part of everybody’s vacation.”
Speaking of safety equipment, tell us about some of the hardships you endure behind the scenes to make the Finest Kind legal and safe for your passengers?
“To be legal, here are some: annual coast guard inspections for Certificate of Inspection or COI (more than 6 passengers), business licensing for county and city, Captain’s license (renews every 5 years and includes physical), TWIC® card (TSA Card with all info and background), and federal permits like yearly renewals, FCC licensing, yearly documentation, yearly life raft inspection and renewal, auto inflate life raft (a 25 man raft), EPIRB renewals (emergency position indicating radio beacons), drug consortium (random drug testing for all crew members), annual automatic fire system inspection, and the night watchman system with integrated smoke alarms and carbon monoxide.”
So not all Destin Fishing Charters play by the rules?
“There are about 90 federally permitted charter boats around Destin and several hundred guide boats. There are a number of illegal charters around that don’t have proper permitting. And some with non-licensed captains.”
Destin, Florida
What makes Destin, Florida a unique destination for saltwater anglers compared to other fishing locations?
“We’re 10 minutes from fishing. Beautiful beaches for the families, restaurants, closest to the deep water than anyone else on the coast with our deep-water curve.”
Are there any specific challenges or advantages to fishing in the waters off Destin?
“Destin is a great place for vacationing with families. The fishing is great. That means you have lots of customers and lots of competition with other boats.”
